Reviving a Vintage Laptop: Setting Up for My Child’s First Digital Adventure

In today’s digital age, even older technology can find new life, and I recently had the opportunity to breathe new vitality into my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This device is set to become my four-year-old daughter’s inaugural laptop, providing her with the perfect platform to begin her journey into typing and writing.

One of my primary goals is to create an intuitive user experience for her. To make this transition smoother, I’m exploring ways to configure the laptop to boot directly into a text editor. This would allow her to dive straight into writing without the need to navigate the complexities of a mouse just yet. The idea is to keep it simple and engaging as she develops her digital skills.

Another aspect I’m curious about is whether I can configure the laptop to start with the Caps Lock key enabled by default. This could aid in her early writing endeavors, making it easier for her to see her work in uppercase letters without worrying about toggling settings or remembering key functions.
