GPU Fans Spin, but No LEDs and No Display Output

Troubleshooting a PC Build: When GPU Fans Spin But Nothing Displays

Building a new PC can be an exhilarating experience, filled with anticipation and excitement. However, sometimes it doesn’t go as planned. A recent challenge I faced while assembling a custom computer for a friend serves as a prime example. Here’s a rundown of the situation, the troubleshooting process, and the ultimate resolution.

The Challenge

After successfully piecing together a brand-new system, I powered it on, eager to see the results. To my surprise, the fans on the GPU whirred to life, and the lights illuminating the case, motherboard, and CPU fan glowed warmly. However, the graphics card failed to output any signal to the monitor, and the familiar ‘GIGABYTE’ logo remained dark.

Given that every component in this build was fresh except for the graphics card—my trusty, albeit older model—I wondered if it was simply time for an upgrade. Yet, a quick test with this same graphics card in my existing setup revealed that it performed flawlessly, displaying images without a hitch.

As if testing fate, I also installed my more powerful RTX 3080 GPU into my friend’s new build, and the same issue persisted: fans spun, but there was no light and no output.

The Troubleshooting Journey

With everything seeming in place—the power supply was robust enough and all connections appeared secure—I felt stumped. I triple-checked that the monitor was functioning correctly by testing it with another device, which it passed without issue.

My experience led me down a path of potential concerns:

  • Incompatible Components: Despite being a newer motherboard with updated features, it’s possible that something in the compatibility mix did not align perfectly with either graphics card.
  • Power Supply: Although I was confident in the PSU’s capacity, some fans do spin without sufficient power being directed to essential components like the GPU.
  • Installation Error: It was worth considering whether the graphics cards were seated correctly in their slots.

The Resolution

As frustration began to mount, I decided to take decisive action. In a bout of impatience, I purchased a new motherboard and embarked on a complete rebuild. Thankfully, this time around, everything clicked into place seamlessly!

Conclusion

While this might not have been the easiest path, it’s a testament to the unpredictable nature of PC building. Sometimes, no amount of troubleshooting will yield immediate results, and a fresh start can be the best solution
