A Man Purchased My Delidded i7-7700K (4c/8t), Now Claiming Only 2 Cores / 4 Threads Are Recognized

Navigating the Complexities of Selling a Delidded CPU: A Cautionary Tale

Selling computer components online can be a rewarding venture, but it often comes with its own set of challenges. Recently, I sold a delidded Intel i7-7700K processor that I had carefully prepped for performance. Unfortunately, the transaction took a turn I hadn’t anticipated, providing a learning experience for both me and the buyer.

The Sale

Before shipping the processor, I dedicated significant time—over 1,700 words across five pages—to create comprehensive instructions for the new owner. This documentation included useful links to guides and video tutorials, ensuring he had all the information he needed to operate the delidded CPU safely and effectively.

The CPU was sent without resealing, accompanied by the leftover Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut, which I explicitly stated might not be enough for adequate heat dissipation. I asked the buyer to consider purchasing additional liquid metal if he needed more than what I provided. Despite my thorough communication, concerns arose shortly after he received it.

The Problem Emerges

After the sale, the buyer reported that he was only seeing two cores and four threads active in Task Manager and CPU-Z. While the processor was recognized correctly in BIOS on his Asus Prime B250M motherboard, it raised a few red flags. I guided him through the necessary BIOS and msconfig settings to ensure everything was configured correctly, including checking that the “Number of processors” option was unchecked.

Resolution Attempts

After reiterating the instructions, the buyer successfully detected all four cores and eight threads. However, his concerns shifted to high idle temperatures, which prompted further discussion. He shared a temperature screenshot that revealed alarming readings, leaving me worried that he hadn’t applied the liquid metal correctly. I mentioned that he should reapply it to both the die and the integrated heat spreader (IHS), as I had advised originally.

While I was apprehensive about the potential for further mishaps, his main interest seemed to lie in enhancing his gaming experience rather than navigating the nuances of thermal management.

Reflecting on the Experience

Despite my attempts to guide him throughout the process, I realized that some buyers may not possess the expertise needed to handle delicate components like a delidded CPU. I had expressed my concerns prior to the transaction, suggesting he might be better suited for factory-sealed processors, yet
