Reviving a Vintage Laptop for a Young Learner: Setting Up Ubuntu for My Child

In an effort to breathe new life into my 12-year-old laptop, I decided to install Ubuntu. This refurbished device is now designated as my 4-year-old child’s very first laptop, providing a wonderful opportunity for her to learn key skills like typing and writing in a digital environment.

One of my primary goals is to simplify her experience by having the laptop boot directly into a text editor. This way, she won’t need to navigate with a mouse just yet, allowing her to focus solely on developing her typing abilities. I’m exploring the best method to set this up so that it’s user-friendly for her young age.

Additionally, I’m considering whether it’s possible to configure the laptop to start with the Caps Lock function enabled. This would help her become familiar with the shape and feel of uppercase letters as she practices her writing.

As I work through these adjustments, I’m excited about the prospect of fostering my daughter’s creativity and literacy skills through this project. If you have any tips or recommendations for setting up a user-friendly environment for young learners, I would love to hear your thoughts!
