PC games rarely feature 1440p at 60FPS modes, but this appears to be unintentional.

The Mysterious Case of 1440p 24 FPS Limitation in PC Gaming

If you’re a PC gamer like me, you might have encountered a puzzling phenomenon regarding frame rates and resolution options. While gaming at various resolutions, I’ve noticed a peculiar limitation that seems to affect nearly every game I’ve played over the past decade. It seems that when I choose 1440p resolution, my frame rate options are drastically restricted, sometimes causing frustration during gameplay.

In my experience, whenever I opt for 1080p resolution, I’m granted a full range of frame rates to choose from—ranging from 24 FPS all the way up to a smooth 120 FPS. The same goes for 4K (2160p) resolution; every option is available, from 24 FPS to 120 FPS.

However, when I switch to 1440p, something strange happens: the only frame rate available is a mere 24 FPS. It’s baffling to see that there are no options for more fluid frame rates such as 30 FPS, 50 FPS, or 60 FPS. Reflecting on my gaming experience, the one exception I’ve found that allows full frame rate flexibility at 1440p is the popular game, Genshin Impact.

I’ve even attempted to create custom profiles within the NVIDIA Control Panel to adjust settings, hoping it would rectify this restriction. While those adjustments seemed to work for Windows, they did not lift the 24 FPS cap that games impose at 1440p. It’s worth noting that I use a 4K monitor that can support all resolutions and frame rates, and my various gaming rigs have never displayed any unusual limitations prior to this.

For quite some time, I accepted this limitation as a norm, assuming it was a technical hurdle inherent to 1440p gaming. However, after recently engaging with discussions online, I’ve discovered that many gamers consider 1440p at 60 FPS to be a typical experience. This revelation led me to question the validity of my experiences; is this behavior truly as uncommon as it seems?

Could the persistent use of NVIDIA graphics cards be influencing this enigmatic restriction on frame rates? If anyone has insights or similar experiences regarding the 1440p 24 FPS limitation, I would love to hear your thoughts. Is there a hidden reason behind this odd phenomenon that many gaming enthusiasts encounter?
