Reviving an Old Laptop: Setting Up Ubuntu for My Child’s First Device
In today’s fast-paced technology world, it’s easy to overlook older devices, but with a little creativity and effort, they can still serve a purpose. Recently, I decided to breathe new life into my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu, transforming it into a suitable device for my 4-year-old daughter. This way, she can begin her journey in learning how to type and express herself through writing.
One crucial aspect I’m currently focusing on is user accessibility. I want to simplify her experience by configuring the laptop to automatically launch a text editor upon startup. This would eliminate the need for her to navigate the mouse, allowing her to dive straight into writing. It’s a great opportunity for her to familiarize herself with the keyboard ahead of mastering mouse skills.
Additionally, I have a question regarding ease of use: Is it possible to set the Caps Lock key to be activated upon startup? I think this could help her maintain a consistent writing style at this early stage, encouraging her to practice proper capitalization from the very beginning.
