My mom’s attempt to “fix” the WiFi issues only made things worse—need some advice

The WiFi Woes: When Tech Troubles Double Down

In today’s fast-paced world, a reliable internet connection is essential. Unfortunately, when technology goes awry, the solutions can sometimes make matters worse. Recently, I found myself in a predicament that perfectly illustrates this point, courtesy of my well-meaning mother and her outdated computer.

For the past couple of days, our WiFi connection has been spotty at best. While I was focused on diagnosing that issue, my mom decided to take matters into her own hands. She’s been using a vintage Mac from 2011, now running Windows 7—an unusual pairing, to say the least.

In her attempt to resolve the WiFi dilemma, she initiated something called “system repair” (or “obnova systému,” as it’s known in Czech). With the best intentions, she hoped this would somehow mend both her computer and the WiFi. However, once the machine restarted, things spiraled out of control.

The computer began to load files and then entered the system repair phase, which, to no one’s surprise, stretched into eternity. Eventually, it flashed a message indicating it could not fix the issue or that there wasn’t any problem at all. But that’s just it—the endless loop of loading suggests otherwise.

Now, the computer is caught in a frustrating cycle: attempts to bypass the repair lead to a reset, tossing me back to square one, unable to even log in.

As I grapple with this technical quagmire, I can’t help but wonder what the next steps should be. Should I attempt a manual reset, or is it time to consult a professional? Tech issues can snowball quickly, especially when well-meaning attempts to fix one problem only exacerbate another.

If you’ve had similar experiences or have strategies for rescuing a stubborn computer, I’d love to hear your advice. What should I do next? Let’s untangle this together!
