Revived My 12-Year-Old Laptop and Set Up Ubuntu: Creating a Learning Tool for My 4-Year-Old to Practice Typing and Writing

Reviving an Old Laptop: A New Beginning for My Child’s Learning Journey

Recently, I took on the rewarding challenge of rejuvenating a 12-year-old laptop, and I decided to install Ubuntu as its operating system. This refurbished device is now set to become my 4-year-old daughter’s very first laptop, enabling her to explore the world of typing and writing in a fun and engaging way.

One of my primary goals is to create a user-friendly experience, especially since she is just starting to learn how to use a computer. To make this easier, I’m investigating the simplest method to configure the laptop so that it automatically opens a text editor upon startup. This way, she won’t need to navigate with a mouse just yet—she can dive straight into her writing adventures.

Additionally, I’m curious about a useful feature: is it possible to set the device to boot with the Caps Lock activated? This would provide her with a bit more flexibility as she experiments with her typing skills.

As I continue to enhance this laptop for her learning experience, I look forward to sharing tips and findings that may benefit others on a similar journey. Stay tuned for updates on this delightful educational initiative!
