Recovered my 12-year-old laptop and set up Ubuntu — now it’s my 4-year-old’s first computer to practice typing and writing.

Reviving a Vintage Laptop: Setting Up Ubuntu for My Young Learner

I recently undertook a fulfilling tech project: I revived my trusty 12-year-old laptop and transformed it into a learning tool by installing Ubuntu. This laptop is designed to be my four-year-old daughter’s first experience with technology, providing her a platform to explore typing and writing in an engaging way.

As I set up the device, I wanted to streamline her experience. One of my primary goals is to make it easy for her to access the text editor without needing to navigate the mouse just yet. I’m currently exploring the simplest method to configure the laptop such that it opens directly into a text editor upon startup. This would eliminate any unnecessary steps and allow her to focus on her writing.

Additionally, I have another query: is it possible to set the laptop to start with Caps Lock enabled? This setting could be helpful for her as she practices typing uppercase letters, allowing for a smoother learning curve.

I’m excited about this venture and welcome any advice or suggestions on creating a seamless user experience for my little one. Let’s inspire the next generation of learners, one keystroke at a time!
