Can You Retrieve Someone’s Phone Number via Proximity with an iPhone?
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you wanted to stay connected with someone after a date but missed the chance to exchange phone numbers? It happened to me recently. After a lovely evening out, the person I met shared his number, but I didn’t save it, leading to a perplexing encounter the next day.
After deleting the dating app we first connected on, I was surprised to receive a message that seemed to come out of nowhere. This got me thinking: is it possible for someone to obtain your phone number through proximity using an iPhone?
To clarify, my AirDrop settings are configured to allow connections only from my contacts, and honestly, I’ve never considered the possibility of someone accessing my number simply by being nearby. With my iPhone XR updated to the latest software, I began wondering if there’s a method by which such a thing could happen.
For those unfamiliar, AirDrop is designed to allow file sharing between nearby Apple devices, but it seems unlikely that it could be used to extract a phone number without explicit consent.
If you’ve encountered a similar situation, or if you have insights on how proximity technology interacts with personal data like phone numbers, I would love to hear your thoughts. Please share your experiences and knowledge in the comments!
