A Surreal Experience: My PC Typed to Me – Seeking Insight
I recently encountered an unsettling situation with my computer that left me both baffled and alarmed. While immersed in my usual gaming session of Battlefield 4, I aimed to capture some gameplay footage using NVIDIA’s recording feature. In the process, I inadvertently pressed a series of keyboard shortcuts until I hit the right combination to save my game clips.
After successfully recording, however, things took a strange turn. My PC began to behave erratically, seemingly pressing random keys on its own. To my surprise, the game opened its chat window and autonomously typed the phrase “amr admin.” Faced with confusion and concern, I quickly exited the game.
To further complicate matters, when I opened Chrome, the search bar populated with coherent sentences, such as “use thea hze li again?” and “deah but now i might not be able ti do much :^_.” My initial reaction was to pinpoint the source, so I attempted to press keys to see if I could regain control, yet it became clear that actual sentences were being typed without my consent.
Prompted by urgency, I ran an anti-malware scan using Malwarebytes, which returned no results. As I attempted to leave Battlefield, my game reconnected to the server automatically, and my mouse began flickering intermittently until I opted for a reboot.
I thoroughly checked my keyboard settings, macros, and any possible related issues, but found nothing. An online search yielded limited answers, leaving me feeling quite uneasy. I haven’t downloaded anything new in the last two weeks, which adds to the mystery.
What should I do next? While I contemplate performing a complete wipe of my system, I am hesitant due to the importance of the files I have stored. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Is my PC compromised, and how do I proceed?
P.S.: Please excuse any disorganization in this post; I’m typing quickly on my phone amidst this panic.
Updates on the Situation
After a while, I couldn’t reproduce the strange typing, even when attempting the specific keystrokes again.
I appreciate the support from everyone who offered guidance. I checked all my macros and ensured that no unauthorized connections were present. Choosing caution over convenience, I decided to wipe my PC entirely. I plan to monitor the situation closely and return to retest if any unusual activity arises again.
In reflection, many
