Managing Microsoft Edge Tabs: A Thanksgiving Dilemma
As we gather with family during the holiday season, many of us find ourselves navigating not only the joys of togetherness but also the tech troubles that come with it. Just the other day, I encountered a rather amusing yet frustrating scenario at Grandma’s house involving her trusty Acer Aspire E1 running Windows 10.
Picture this: Grandma had an astounding 438 tabs open in Microsoft Edge! While it’s impressive in a way, it quickly turned into a challenge as the browser slowed to a crawl, making it impossible to even navigate to the settings to close them down individually. I found myself wondering—how could I effectively close all these tabs and prevent them from reopening upon startup?
After some trial and error, I discovered a couple of shortcuts that might be helpful for anyone facing a similar predicament. First, to force close Microsoft Edge without navigating through the application, simply press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager. From there, find Microsoft Edge in the list, select it, and click on “End Task.” This will instantly close the application, including all those pesky tabs.
For a fresh start the next time you open Edge, you have a couple of options. To ensure it doesn’t attempt to restore the previous session of tabs, click on the three dots in the upper right corner when you launch Microsoft Edge, navigate to “Settings,” and go to the “On startup” section. Selecting “Open a new tab” instead of “Continue where you left off” will help keep things streamlined and clutter-free.
While it may seem like an overabundance of tabs is an easy fix through another browser, I decided it was too complicated to switch her over right then and there. Plus, downloading a new browser would require navigating back through the 438 tabs, which wasn’t practical.
If you find yourself in a similar spot this holiday season, these tips could help preserve your sanity and ensure a smoother user experience for both you and your loved ones. Happy Thanksgiving!
