Reviving an Old Laptop: Preparing it for My Child’s First Learning Experience

Having recently restored my trusty 12-year-old laptop and installed Ubuntu, I am thrilled to present it as a gift to my 4-year-old daughter. This will serve as her very first laptop, a wonderful opportunity for her to learn fundamental skills such as typing and writing.

Simplifying the Experience

To ensure that her introduction to technology is as seamless as possible, I am on the lookout for the best method to configure the laptop so that it opens directly into a text editor upon startup. My goal is to minimize her reliance on a mouse, allowing her to focus solely on her keyboard skills without added complexity.

Starting with Caps Lock

Additionally, I have a practical question: Is it feasible to set the device to power on with the Caps Lock feature enabled? This small adjustment could make her initial experience more user-friendly, especially as she learns the basics of typing.
