Restored My 12-Year-Old Laptop and Installed Ubuntu—Preparing It as My 4-Year-Old Daughter’s First Device to Learn Typing and Writing

Revitalizing an Old Laptop: A New Beginning for My Child

In a world increasingly driven by technology, I recently embarked on a rewarding project to breathe new life into a twelve-year-old laptop. With some tinkering, I successfully installed Ubuntu, transforming this once-neglected device into a tool for my four-year-old daughter. It’s an exciting milestone as she embarks on her journey of learning to type and write.

One of my main goals is to create a seamless user experience for her. I want her to focus on her writing and keyboard skills, without the distraction of learning to navigate a mouse just yet. To facilitate this, I’m exploring options to configure the laptop to open directly into a text editor upon startup. This way, she can dive right into her creative endeavors without any unnecessary hurdles.

Additionally, I’m curious about whether it’s possible to set the laptop to start with the Caps Lock feature enabled. This would allow her to express herself more clearly, particularly as she begins to explore more about letters and uppercase writing.

As I continue to set up this laptop, I’m filled with enthusiasm for the learning adventures that await. Teaching a child these foundational skills is a journey worth embarking on, and I can’t wait to see what she will create using her new technological companion.
