Feeling clueless—an IT professional struggling to solve this issue

Troubleshooting a Disappearing GPU: A Guide for IT Professionals

As IT professionals, we encounter various hardware malfunctions that can leave us perplexed, even with our expertise. Recently, I faced a challenge that had me scratching my head, and I thought sharing my experience might benefit others in the same boat.

The Scenario

I recently purchased a used laptop from my previous employer, equipped with an Nvidia 3060 graphics card. For the first two weeks, everything functioned smoothly, but then suddenly, the GPU stopped working.

My Troubleshooting Journey

Determined to find a solution, I embarked on a thorough troubleshooting process. Here’s what I tried:

  1. Reinstalling Drivers: I began with the most straightforward step—reinstalling the GPU drivers. Unfortunately, this had no effect.

  2. Updating the BIOS: Next, I updated the BIOS to the latest version, hoping it might resolve any compatibility issues.

  3. Rolling Back Updates: I reverted both the BIOS and Windows updates, in case recent changes were causing the conflict.

  4. Driver Management: I uninstalled the drivers altogether and even attempted to roll back to older versions, but the problem persisted.

  5. Windows Reinstallation: As a last resort, I took the plunge and reinstalled Windows, then reverted to an earlier version to see if this would help restore the GPU functionality.

Current Status

Despite all of my efforts, the Nvidia 3060 is still recognized in the Device Manager. However, it doesn’t appear to be acknowledged by any applications or games I tried to run.
