Restored my 12-year-old laptop and installed Ubuntu — now it’s my 4-year-old daughter’s first device to learn typing and writing skills.

Reviving an Old Laptop for My Child’s First Tech Experience

Recently, I took on the challenge of restoring a 12-year-old laptop and decided to breathe new life into it by installing Ubuntu. This upgraded device will serve as my four-year-old child’s first laptop, providing a fantastic opportunity to introduce her to the world of technology through typing and writing.

One of my goals is to simplify her experience. I’m looking for the most user-friendly way to set it up so that when she powers on the laptop, it automatically opens to a text editor. This way, she won’t need to worry about navigating with a mouse right away, allowing her to focus on developing her typing skills.

Additionally, I have a minor technical question: is there a way to configure the device to start with Caps Lock enabled? Setting this up could further aid her in easily recognizing letters and beginning to form words.

I’m excited to see how she engages with this new tool and would love to hear any tips or tricks from fellow parents or tech enthusiasts on making her experience as seamless as possible!
