Reviving a Vintage Laptop for My Child’s First Tech Adventure

In an age where technology is evolving at breakneck speed, I recently embarked on an exciting project: breathing new life into a 12-year-old laptop. I decided to install Ubuntu on it, transforming it into the perfect first laptop for my four-year-old daughter. This device will serve as a fantastic tool for her to learn typing and writing skills in a fun, engaging way.

As I set up the laptop, my primary goal was to make the experience as user-friendly as possible. I want to ensure that she can access a text editor without the need to navigate with a mouse at this early stage. Therefore, I’m exploring methods to configure the laptop so it directly opens the text editor upon startup. This will allow her to dive right into her writing without any distractions or complicated menu navigation.

Additionally, I am considering whether it’s feasible to have the Caps Lock feature activated by default when the laptop powers up. This could be beneficial for young learners who often find capital letters easier to work with while practicing their writing.
