Exploring the 1440p 60FPS Enigma in PC Gaming

In the ever-evolving landscape of PC gaming, players often encounter perplexing technical limitations that can mar the experience. One such mystery that has puzzled gamers over the years is the peculiar absence of 60FPS support for 1440p resolution in most titles. Despite the advancements in hardware and the impressive capabilities of modern gaming setups, many players have noticed a consistent barrier: 1440p resolution seems to be capped at a mere 24 FPS in numerous games, and the reasons behind this anomaly are still unclear.

Over the last decade, I’ve owned a variety of gaming PCs, and an unusual pattern has emerged. When I configure games to run at 1080p resolution, I’m greeted with an array of framerate options—ranging from 24 FPS to a robust 120 FPS. Transitioning to 4K resolution yields a similar outcome, with the same extensive list of available FPS settings. However, when I set the resolution to 1440p, I’m only provided with the option for 24 FPS, without any possibility of selecting higher framerates like 30, 50, or 60 FPS.

In my exploration of this conundrum, the only game that has managed to break this mold is Genshin Impact, which uniquely allows a full spectrum of framerate choices at 1440p. I’ve even attempted to create custom settings through the NVIDIA Control Panel, which modifies settings within Windows but fails to unlock higher framerates for games running at 1440p. It’s worth noting that my 4K monitor is fully capable of supporting these resolutions without issue, and my various gaming rigs haven’t presented with any peculiar restrictions.

For a significant time, I accepted this as a technical limitation. However, recent discussions within the gaming community have revealed that many gamers consider 1440p at 60 FPS to be standard. This realization prompted me to ask around, and it appears that this frustrating limitation is a shared experience across diverse hardware configurations.

This begs the question—what could be the underlying cause of this phenomenon? Is it potentially linked to NVIDIA graphics cards, which I have consistently used throughout my gaming journey? Or is it a matter of software optimizations made by game developers that inadvertently restrict framerate options at 1440p?
