Unnoticed Intrusion: How My Browser Was Hijacked While I Was Fresh Out of the Shower to Access My Cryptocurrency Accounts

Unwelcomed Intrusion: A Wake-Up Call for Cybersecurity Awareness

Recently, I experienced a startling incident that highlights the importance of online security. Just as I stepped out of the shower, I noticed something alarming: my web browser opened on its own. To my disbelief, I watched as someone typed a derogatory term into the address bar of Google Chrome and began exploring folders on my computer, ultimately navigating to my cryptocurrency bookmarks.

Panic set in as I attempted to regain control. My initial instinct was to use Alt+F4 to close the browser, but that failed to work. Even my mouse seemed unresponsive. In a state of urgency, I resorted to force shutting down my computer. What should I do next?

After a wave of insightful suggestions from the community, I took swift action to secure my digital assets. I changed all my passwords, unplugged my device, and completed a clean installation of my operating system. To bolster my defenses, I configured LastPass to prompt for my password with each browser launch and I implemented token/authenticator applications for added verification during logins.

A clarifying detail to note: I do not store any cryptocurrency directly on my device; the folders I saw were simply bookmarks to Coinbase and Binance. It was clear to me that the intruder was attempting to access these sites for malicious purposes. Interestingly, the hacker typed the word “bitch,” then erased it before exploring my bookmarks.

Many commenters speculated that my past use of TeamViewer could have made me vulnerable, but I opted not to reinstall it after reading the advice. Typically, a TeamViewer session takeover results in my background going black—this did not happen in this instance. Moreover, I experienced complete loss of mouse and keyboard functionality during the incident, which added to my confusion.

It’s worth mentioning that I have a tech-savvy friend who is part of a hacker group, and I trust his expertise. He has a passion for defending his friends, and I felt reassured knowing he could provide additional insights.

This experience serves as a critical reminder of the importance of maintaining strong security practices when managing our digital lives. Whether you’re handling cryptocurrency, personal data, or simply browsing the internet, stay vigilant and proactive to protect yourself from unwanted intrusions.
