A Mysterious Incident: My PC Typed Sentences on Its Own – Need Advice
I recently experienced a bizarre situation with my computer that left me feeling uneasy, and I’m seeking some guidance from this community.
While engrossed in a game of Battlefield 4, I attempted to capture some gameplay footage using NVIDIA’s recording feature. As I navigated through various key combinations, I inadvertently triggered a command that began to malfunction my keyboard. To my shock, the game’s chat window popped up and automatically typed “amr admin.” This prompted me to exit the game in a flurry of confusion.
Things escalated quickly when I opened Chrome, only to find my search bar generating coherent sentences without any input from me. In a state of disbelief, I pressed random keys, trying to halt the unusual behavior. Yet, it was clear that the system was still automatically typing; messages included “use thea hze li again?” and “deah but now i might not be able ti do much :^_.”
Worried about potential malware, I promptly ran a scan with Malwarebytes, but it reported no threats. To add to the chaos, as I attempted to exit Battlefield, the game continuously reconnected me to the server, and my mouse started flickering erratically until I decided to reboot my machine.
To ensure everything was functioning correctly, I inspected my keyboard’s macros and settings, but found nothing amiss. After scouring the internet for similar experiences, I came up empty-handed, which only heightened my anxiety about whether my system was compromised or if it was just a strange hardware glitch. I hadn’t downloaded anything new in the last couple of weeks, so this incident came as a complete surprise.
I’m at a crossroads now, contemplating a hard wipe of my computer to protect my data, but I have essential files stored on it. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is my PC compromised? What steps should I take next?
Updates and Community Feedback
Edit 1: I’m unable to replicate the typing issue, even when I repeat the key combinations that led to this incident.
Edit 2: Thank you all for your helpful responses. I double-checked all macros and monitored for any suspicious connections, but found nothing unusual. As a precaution, I decided to wipe my PC clean, despite my concerns about losing important files. I plan to revisit the situation and run further tests to see if the issue resurfaces.
