Troubleshooting a Persistent Computer Dilemma: Seeking Advice on Power Issues
If you’ve ever encountered perplexing issues with your computer, you know how frustrating it can be. Recently, my own machine has taken a turn for the bizarre, and I’m reaching out to the community for guidance on what might be causing these ongoing problems.
The Backstory
To provide some context, around three years ago, I had my computer repaired after it was fitted with a faulty part from a vendor I won’t name. Ever since the repair, I’ve encountered a slew of quirky behaviors. Initially, my system would frequently display a “CPU fan error” message at startup, even though the fan was functioning correctly and the CPU temperatures were normal. Instead of reaching out for support, I opted to boot into the BIOS to bypass the error, which, in hindsight, may not have been the wisest choice.
A short while later, I started experiencing difficulties with Windows. Upon troubleshooting, I realized that it stemmed from a problematic SSD, which I eventually replaced. After addressing that issue, things were running smoothly—until my latest conundrum arose.
The Current Issue
Now, when I press the power button, my computer exhibits a strange inconsistency; sometimes it powers on, and at other times, it simply doesn’t. When it fails to start, the power button lights up, and the power supply shows signs of activity. However, none of the peripherals—including my keyboard and mouse—respond, and nothing displays on the screen.
When facing this problem, I have to engage in a series of trial-and-error steps, such as powering the unit down and back up, toggling the power connectors, and occasionally even opening up the case to check connections. However, everything appears to be securely connected when I do so.
Additional Quirks
Apart from the startup issues, my computer performs quite well overall. Still, I’ve noticed a couple of other irregularities. For instance, switching the HDMI output from my monitor to my TV sometimes causes a complete system restart. Additionally, if I inadvertently bump the unit—often with my knee while getting up—the computer can unexpectedly shut off. These occurrences seem to happen randomly and add to my overall unease about the system’s reliability.
