r/techsupport Goes Dark: A Stand Against Reddit’s API Changes
As many of you may be aware, the r/techsupport moderation team has made the decision to temporarily shut down the subreddit in response to significant changes being implemented by Reddit regarding their API.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit unveiled a policy shift that dramatically increases the cost of using their API, effectively threatening the existence of numerous beloved third-party mobile applications. This change will severely limit users’ access to many of the quality-of-life features that these alternative platforms provide, resulting in a less engaging experience for the community.
Popular apps such as Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, and BaconReader are all at risk due to these changes. Even for users who do not utilize mobile apps, this policy shift has broader implications. It undermines essential tools that enhance user experience, including Reddit Enhancement Suite and the classic desktop version of Reddit at old.reddit.com.
Moreover, this isn’t merely a user-centric issue; many subreddit moderators rely on external tools to effectively manage their communities, ensuring conversations remain on-topic and free from spam. Without access to these crucial resources, the quality and integrity of subreddit communities could be jeopardized.
In light of these developments, the r/techsupport moderation team stands united against these API pricing alterations. Consequently, we will be shutting down the subreddit for a minimum of 48 hours, starting June 12th, in solidarity with all affected users and communities.
