Navigating the “Your Computer Has Been Locked” Virus: A Cautionary Tale
Recently, my wife encountered a common yet alarming situation: she was confronted with a “Your computer has been locked” virus on her Apple device, which prompted her to call the number 833-324-0303. This unsolicited call led her to someone claiming to be from Microsoft—a red flag that immediately raised my concerns.
As the situation unfolded, I advised her to restart her computer, a simple yet effective troubleshooting step. When she inquired about the legitimacy of the caller’s claims and where she could find their website, the response she received was even more dubious. The individual insisted, “This is how we operate—having a website doesn’t help.” This statement only added to my skepticism about the legitimacy of the situation.
Fortunately, upon restarting her Mac, the warning message disappeared, a reassuring outcome indeed. However, this experience reminded me of similar incidents I’ve encountered on my Windows machines, where messages like these pop up roughly every year or two. Each time, a simple shutdown has successfully resolved the issue.
Has anyone else had experiences with this type of malware? I’d love to hear your thoughts and strategies for dealing with such scams. It’s crucial to stay informed and vigilant against these types of threats.
