Frequent internet outages occur at the most inconvenient moments—how can I prevent this?

Troubleshooting Frequent Internet Outages: Seeking Solutions for a Frustrating Situation

Hello, readers!

Today, I’d like to share an intriguing—and somewhat frustrating—experience I’ve encountered regarding internet connectivity in my current living situation. After moving into my partner’s parents’ home, I quickly realized that the internet tends to go down at the most inconvenient times, especially following family disagreements.

The household is quite dynamic, and the stepdad, who is relatively tech-savvy, seems to operate a rather complex network. Intriguingly, the internet outages coincide with arguments, leading to an atmosphere of suspicion regarding the cause of these disruptions. He consistently insists he’s not at fault and even provides me with basic troubleshooting advice, like resetting the router and modem, whenever connectivity issues arise.

Despite following his guidance and trying all the usual fixes, including hard resets of both the modem and router, I’ve been unable to restore the internet on my own. It appears that the connection only returns after he intervenes, often following a heated call with the service provider, Eastlink, where he asserts that the family believes he’s deliberately cutting off access.

To add to my frustrations, he’s changed the administrative password, preventing me from accessing the network settings to investigate further. With my options limited, I am left pondering whether I should look into securing my own internet connection to avoid relying on this unpredictable setup.

I’d appreciate any insights or suggestions on how to handle this situation more effectively. Has anyone dealt with similar challenges? What approaches did you find helpful? I’m eager to gather ideas and continue monitoring the situation in hopes of finding a resolution.

Thanks for your support!
