I Currently Store More Than 500 Hard Drives in My Garage—Seeking Advice

What to Do with 500 Hard Drives: Seeking Advice on a Tech Dilemma

I find myself in quite the predicament: my garage has become a temporary home for over 500 hard drives! This unusual collection originated from my late father-in-law, who years ago amassed a significant quantity of refurbished SCSI hard disk drives (HDDs). Unfortunately, he passed away before he could fulfill his plans to sell them. Now, I’m left navigating the challenge of what to do with this sizable stockpile.

After doing some research, I’ve discovered that the value of these drives varies significantly, ranging from $10 to $120 each. The catch? Many of them are relatively outdated, making it uncertain whether there’s a market for their sale. However, they’re all factory refurbished, still sealed, and securely packaged, which is a plus.

While I grapple with the decision, part of me leans towards scrapping the drives in an effort to cut losses—though, technically, those losses belong to my late father-in-law. The other part of me worries about not making an effort to find a buyer who could genuinely benefit from these drives.

I’m reaching out to the community for guidance. Should I try to sell these drives individually or in bulk, or would that prove to be an uphill battle? Would I be better off considering recycling or scrapping them instead?

For reference, here are the specific model numbers of these hard drives:

  • Seagate Barracuda ST15150N
  • Seagate Barracuda ST118273LC
  • Seagate Cheetah ST118202LC
  • IBM DRHS IEC-950 ECE32148

Any advice or recommendations on how best to proceed would be greatly appreciated!
