First PC assembly – MSI B760 GAMING PLUS WIFI + i7-14700K startup problem

Troubleshooting a First Boot Issue with a New PC Build: MSI B760 GAMING PLUS WIFI and Intel Core i7-14700K

Building a new PC is an exciting milestone, but it can also come with its share of troubleshooting challenges. Recently, I assembled my first custom PC featuring high-performance components, including the Intel Core i7-14700K processor and MSI B760 GAMING PLUS WIFI motherboard. However, upon initial power-up, I encountered a startup issue that some fellow PC builders might find familiar.

System Configuration Overview

Here is a summary of the components involved:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-14700K
  • Motherboard: MSI B760 GAMING PLUS WIFI
  • Memory: 32GB DDR5 (2x16GB kits)
  • Graphics Card: Asus PRIME OC RTX 5070
  • Power Supply: MSI 850W
  • Cooling Solution: Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 (liquid cooling)

The Initial Startup Issue

When powering on the assembled PC for the first time, the system failed to display anything on the monitor. Additionally, the motherboard’s diagnostic LEDs indicated a looping pattern between the CPU and DRAM (memory) indicators. Eventually, only the DRAM LED remained illuminated. Notably, the case fans remained inactive, except for the watercooling pump, which was operational.

Troubleshooting Steps and Observations

  • Memory Placement: I verified that the RAM modules were correctly installed in the recommended slots (A2 and B2), following the motherboard’s manual.

  • Power and Connections: Power cables were securely connected, and the graphics card was properly seated.

  • Peripheral Checks: No external devices were interfering during the initial boot attempt.

This pattern of LED signals suggests potential issues with memory recognition or CPU initialization, common stumbling blocks during first-time builds.

Potential Causes and Solutions

  1. Memory Compatibility and Seating: Even if RAM is installed correctly, compatibility issues or seating problems can cause boot failures. Try reseating the RAM modules carefully, ensuring they click into place fully. If problems persist, test each RAM stick individually or try different slots.

  2. BIOS Compatibility: With new CPUs and motherboards, BIOS versions can be crucial. Ensure that the motherboard has the latest firmware compatible with the Intel Core i7-14700K. If the BIOS is outdated, updating it via BIOS flashback (if supported)
