Understanding and Troubleshooting System Freezing on a Newly Built PC
Introduction
Building a new PC can be an exciting experience, but it often comes with its share of troubleshooting. Recently, I assembled a custom system featuring a Ryzen 7800X3D processor, 32GB of RAM, an AMD 9070xt GPU, and a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD. While the build has generally performed well, I’ve encountered a perplexing issue: complete system freezes. In this article, I’ll share my experience with this problem and explore potential solutions, including whether upgrading my RAM might help.
Description of the Issue
The primary problem involves a total system freeze. During these episodes, all peripherals become unresponsive—keyboard, mouse, and other input devices stop registering any commands. The only way to recover is to wait between 10 seconds and a minute or press the computer’s power button to restart. Notably, any audio playing from videos continues uninterrupted, but the entire graphical display halts, leaving the screen frozen.
How the Issue Manifests
The freeze often occurs under specific conditions, typically shortly after starting the PC and initiating multiple tasks simultaneously. For example, I frequently open a live Twitch stream at 380p resolution (primarily to earn drops) displayed in a side window, while streaming a 1440p video on YouTube. Occasionally, I might have additional Chrome tabs open or attempt to launch a Steam game. These activities seem to trigger the freeze either soon after startup or randomly when the system is under heavy multitasking load.
Current Hardware Setup
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 7800X3D
- RAM: 32GB (2 x 16GB modules)
- GPU: AMD Radeon 9070xt
- Storage: 2TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD
Initial Thoughts and Considerations
Given that I only purchased a single 32GB RAM kit installed in two slots, I wonder if adding more RAM might alleviate the issue. My rationale is that increased memory capacity could potentially handle multitasking more efficiently and prevent system freezes caused by memory bottlenecks.
However, I am aware that system freezes can stem from various factors, including software conflicts, driver issues, overheating, or hardware incompatibilities. Since my familiarity with deep hardware troubleshooting is limited, I am seeking advice on whether expanding RAM is a recommended first step or if I should investigate other potential causes.
