As a student navigating the world of modeling classes, I recently found myself in a perplexing situation involving a free Software trial that spiraled into a hefty $7,500 bill. I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it may resonate with others who find themselves facing similar challenges.

It all started with a routine requirement for my class—signing up for a 7-day free trial of a modeling Software. I created my account, utilized the software for a few days, and assumed everything went smoothly. However, out of the blue, I received communication from a company claiming that my account had been linked to their commercial license. They insisted that I owed them $7,500 for usage over just three days.

Confusion set in as I had no idea how my account could possibly be connected to someone else’s license. I had never entered any information to associate myself with such a plan, nor did I understand how I would even go about doing so. To complicate matters, my account became inaccessible, blocking me from investigating further.

The organization behind the charge stated I needed to pay the sum, leaving me grappling with the reality of whether I was indeed responsible, or if there had been some sort of software glitch. The questions loomed large: Was it the software’s fault? Should the company bear the responsibility? Or did I inadvertently find myself liable for something I had no part in?

After receiving numerous warnings from friends and fellow students about the possibility of it being a scam, I decided to reach out to explain my situation. I simply conveyed that I was a student and it seemed to be a misunderstanding. To my relief, my straightforward approach was enough for them to drop the charges entirely. They even encouraged me to get in touch with the software provider to help pinpoint the source of the mistake.

Following their advice, I contacted Bentley Systems, the software company involved. They were the only ones who could offer clarity on the situation. Their response was enlightening—the investigation confirmed that my project had indeed been done using a commercial license, but it turned out that someone with administrative access inadvertently linked my account to their commercial license before my free trial expired. This led to the colossal fee, which was the result of a possible system glitch or an oversight from the IT personnel of a specific engineering firm.
