New PC – screen going black, random shutdown, and Bluetooth mouse stutter

Troubleshooting Common New PC Issues: Black Screen, Unexpected Shutdowns, and Bluetooth Mouse Stuttering

Upgrading to a new PC can bring exciting performance improvements, but it often comes with its own set of challenges. Recently, I encountered several perplexing problems with my brand-new build that I’d like to share, along with some insights on how to diagnose and potentially resolve such issues.

1. Intermittent Screen Blackouts

One of the first issues I noticed was my monitor randomly going completely black. Interestingly, the problem seemed tied to the DisplayPort connection; physically adjusting or reseating the cable temporarily restored display output. I suspect the cable might be faulty, so I ordered a replacement and plan to test with a new one soon.

Diagnostic considerations:
Cabling: A damaged or poor-quality cable often causes flickering or black screens. Swapping out the cable is the first step.
Monitor hardware: If new cables don’t resolve the issue, test the monitor with a different input or device.
GPU connection: Since this problem did not occur with my previous PC connected via HDMI, the issue might be related to the DisplayPort or the graphics card itself.

2. Random PC Shutdowns During Idle Periods

Another perplexing behavior was my system shutting down unexpectedly after initiating a game download and leaving the PC idle. Upon returning, both the monitor and PC were powered off. While gaming seems stable, these shutdowns when idle could hint at power management settings or hardware issues.

Possible causes:
Power Settings: Check Windows’ power plan settings to see if it’s entering sleep or hibernate incorrectly.
Overheating or PSU issues: Though less likely if temps are normal, it’s worth monitoring system temperatures and ensuring the power supply can handle your build.
Faulty Hardware: A defective motherboard or power delivery component might cause unexpected shutdowns.

3. Bluetooth Mouse Stuttering and Input Delay

Frustratingly, my Bluetooth mouse exhibits intermittent stuttering and slight delays, despite the Bluetooth dongle being plugged into multiple USB ports, and my Ethernet-connected setup remaining stable. Notably, this problem did not exist with my previous PC, which was configured identically.

Troubleshooting tips:
Interference: Bluetooth can be susceptible to wireless interference. Temporarily disable Wi-Fi or other wireless devices to test for improvement.
