r/techsupport will be going dark on June 12 in protest against Reddit’s API changes which kill 3rd party apps

r/TechSupport Takes a Stand: Going Dark in Protest of Reddit’s API Changes

The moderation team at r/TechSupport has made a pivotal decision in response to Reddit’s recent policy changes regarding API pricing. Effective June 12, we will temporarily shut down our subreddit for at least 48 hours to express our strong opposition to changes that threaten the availability of cherished third-party mobile applications.

Understanding the Issue

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced a significant increase in the fees associated with accessing its API, moving from a previously free model to one that many foresee will eliminate third-party applications like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, and BaconReader. These applications have offered a range of user-friendly and innovative features not available in Reddit’s official mobile app, enhancing the overall experience for many users.

The ramifications of this policy change extend beyond mobile users. Even individuals who don’t utilize third-party apps should be aware that such changes could lead to a decline in the various customization options available for Reddit. Tools such as Reddit Enhancement Suite and the traditional old.reddit.com interface may also face restrictions.

Moreover, subreddit moderators rely heavily on external tools to manage communities effectively. The loss of these tools could lead to a less organized and more spam-ridden experience for users.

A Call to Action

In light of these developments, the r/TechSupport moderation team is taking a stand. We believe that protesting this API pricing change is crucial for the integrity and usability of Reddit as a platform. While we are aware that this temporary closure may disrupt access to vital support for many users, we truly believe it is essential for the greater good of the community.

How Can You Contribute?

  1. Show Your Support: Consider reading and signing the open letter advocating for the preservation of third-party applications. You can find it here.

  2. Spread the Word: Share your perspectives and this message on your social media platforms. Awareness is key to inciting change.

Please note that while the subreddit will be inactive, our Live Chat on Discord will remain available for assistance throughout the blackout period.
