Troubleshooting a Newly Assembled AMD PC: From Smooth Operation to Unexpected Failures
Building a new computer can be an exciting journey, but unforeseen issues are not uncommon, especially for first-time builders. Recently, I assembled a custom AMD-based system with high-quality components, and after a day of flawless operation, I encountered critical problems that halted my system unexpectedly. In this article, I’ll detail the build process, the initial successful operation, and the subsequent issues I encountered, along with the troubleshooting steps I’ve taken.
System Overview
Here’s a list of the key components in this build:
- Motherboard: ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- Memory: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 6000MHz 32GB
- Graphics Card: ASRock Radeon RX 9070 XT
- Power Supply: Corsair RM850x White 850W 80+ Gold, ATX 3.1 (2025 model)
Initial Setup and First-Day Operation
The assembly process was carried out in collaboration with an experienced friend, ensuring all components were correctly installed. The PC posted successfully on the first attempt, and Windows 11 was installed without issues. After installing some games and enabling performance profiles such as EXPO-8000 and memory context save, system performance was excellent. I played Final Fantasy XIV for approximately 16 hours on Sunday, achieving fluid gameplay with CPU temperatures around 60°C, and no stability problems.
Overnight, I installed a Windows 11 security update to maintain system security. Everything seemed stable, and I was optimistic about the setup.
Onset of Problems
However, on Monday morning, things took a concerning turn. After a brief offline gaming session and some remote work using Citrix Workspace and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), I started experiencing periodic lag and disconnections. Playing World of Warcraft Classic, I noticed frequent 5-second disconnects every ten minutes—an unusual and frustrating behavior.
Investigating further, I suspected network issues. I tested the Ethernet connection with the onboard Realtek adapter, then switched to WiFi and even used my mobile hotspot to rule out router problems. The connectivity issues persisted across different network connections, leading me to consider hardware or driver issues.
