A Discord user reached out privately to try their game and later shared screenshots revealing my personal details.

Beware of Discord Scams: A Cautionary Tale

Recently, I found myself in a rather unsettling situation on Discord, and I feel compelled to share my experience as a warning to others in the gaming community.

Out of the blue, I received a direct message from a user I had never interacted with before. They requested that I try out their game, sending me a link to download it from itch.io (I’ll spare you the URL). Eagerly, I complied, not fully considering the potential risks involved.

After I installed the game, I was prompted to enter a “beta tester” key to proceed. When I inquired about this key, the user responded by sending me several screenshots claiming they possessed my personal information. They threatened to expose this information on a site called “Doxbin” and other Discord servers, insisting that I had unknowingly downloaded a virus onto my computer.

Panicked but cautious, I immediately conducted antivirus scans using Windows Defender and Avast. To my relief, both scans indicated that my system was free from malware. Additionally, I swiftly changed the passwords for all my important online accounts as a precautionary measure.

Now, I find myself pondering whether this was merely an empty threat or something I should genuinely be concerned about. I have not noticed any unusual activity on my accounts—no alarming pop-ups or locked emails so far. Given that this incident unfolded only around 40 minutes ago, I’m left with questions about the next steps to take.

For anyone reading this, I urge you to exercise vigilance when engaging with unknown users online, especially on platforms like Discord. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of trying new games, but the internet can be fraught with dangers. Stay safe and protect your personal information! If you’ve encountered similar situations or have advice on how to handle potential threats, please share your insights in the comments below.
