A Discord user reached out via DM to have me try their game, then shared screenshots revealing my personal details.

A Cautionary Tale: My Unexpected Encounter with a Discord Game Scammer

Recently, I had an unsettling experience that I think serves as a valuable lesson for anyone who frequents online gaming communities, particularly on platforms like Discord.

It all started when a Discord user reached out to me unsolicited, asking if I would be interested in testing their game. Despite the fact that we had never interacted prior, I was intrigued. The user provided me with a link to their game on itch.io (https://gunfight.itch.io/gunmania) and encouraged me to download it. In hindsight, I realize how naive I was to proceed without a second thought.

After installing the game, I was prompted to enter a “beta tester” key to start playing. When I inquired about this key, the user responded in a menacing way, sending me screenshots that purportedly contained my personal information. They claimed to have acquired my details and threatened to leak them on Doxbin, as well as share them across various Discord servers. To top it off, they alleged that I had a virus on my computer.

Feeling alarmed, I immediately conducted scans with both the built-in Windows antivirus and Avast. Thankfully, neither scan detected any malware or issues on my system. Moreover, I took precautionary measures by changing the passwords for all my essential accounts.

Now, I’m left with a lingering concern. Was this individual genuinely a threat, or merely attempting to intimidate me into compliance? Given that I downloaded an unknown application, I realize I may have put myself at risk. As of now, it’s been about 40 minutes since the incident, and I haven’t noticed any unusual activity on my accounts, such as unexpected login alerts or security breaches.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, here are some steps I recommend:

  1. Be Skeptical: Always approach unsolicited messages, especially those asking you to download Software, with caution.

  2. Conduct Security Scans: If you suspect a breach, run multiple antivirus scans to ensure your system remains secure.

  3. Update Passwords: Change your passwords to important services and consider enabling two-factor authentication for added protection.

  4. Stay Informed: If you encounter threats or intimidation online, it’s essential to stay aware and keep communication channels open with trustworthy friends or community moderators.

In summary, while I’m relieved that my scans returned clear results, this experience has heightened my awareness of the potential hazards lurking
