A guy purchased my delidded i7-7700K (4c/8t) processor, but now he claims only 2 cores and 4 threads are detected

Navigating the Challenges of Selling a Delidded CPU: A Buyer-Seller Saga

Recently, I encountered an interesting situation after selling my delidded Intel i7-7700K processor, a model with a four-core, eight-thread configuration that has continued to be popular with many computer enthusiasts. As I’ve learned, selling specialized hardware can come with a unique set of challenges, especially when dealing with advanced modifications like delidding.

Upon selling the processor, I took extra care to provide the buyer with comprehensive instructions—totaling around 1,700 words—covering everything from installation to optimal usage. I included links to various guides and video tutorials to ensure he felt supported throughout the process. Despite my diligence, I opted not to reseal the CPU before shipping it, as I wanted to provide the remaining Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut that I had used for cooling.

Before finalizing the sale, I made clear to the buyer the importance of using an adequate amount of liquid metal. I advised him that if he found the provided amount insufficient for both the die and the included copper integrated heat spreader, he’d need to acquire more liquid metal for optimal coverage. Unfortunately, my careful warnings didn’t seem to resonate with him.

The buyer later messaged me, expressing concerns that only half of the CPU’s cores and threads were registering, showcasing just two out of four cores and four out of eight threads in diagnostic tools such as Task Manager and CPU-Z. However, the processor was correctly identified in his BIOS, which left me pondering over potential resolutions.

I guided him through resetting some settings in the System Configuration and ensured he checked the BIOS settings on his Asus Prime B250M motherboard. To my relief, after retracing our steps, he was able to activate all cores and threads. However, another issue emerged regarding his CPU temperatures.

I expressed my concern that his idle temperatures seemed higher than I would expect. In my opinion, it would be prudent for him to apply the liquid metal again, ensuring he followed my guidelines closely. However, I was apprehensive about the possibility of him making mistakes in the process, given the delicate nature of the task.

Reflection on the Sale

Throughout this experience, I remained mindful of the responsibilities associated with selling such equipment. I had originally indicated that he might not have been the most suitable candidate for handling a delidded CPU, yet he still pursued the purchase. After working diligently to assist him in resolving the initial issue, I later clarified
