The Generous Gift: A Full PC Upgrade

As many of you may recall from my previous post, we started our journey with my youngest son’s first PC—a modest, second-hand build that I hoped to upgrade in the future. Little did we expect that a kind-hearted soul on Reddit would see our post and offer to send us a complete set of upgraded parts. Initially, I struggled to believe this was genuine. My mind raced from skepticism to caution, especially after hearing promises of a simple GPU upgrade. However, I was astounded when the package turned out to contain a full new build!

Thanks to Scan Computers UK, who gracefully navigated the obstacles posed by ordering on Amazon, the parts arrived while I was away for work.

A Father and Son Project

After a week of anticipation and a crash course in PC building (mind you, my experience only dated back to my teenage years), the day finally came when I could return home to my excited son. With all the parts laid out and armed with my rudimentary wire diagram—crafted courtesy of my trusty MS Paint skills—we dove into this adventure together.

Upon returning home, we kicked things off by installing the cooler brackets, CPU, and RAM. Unfortunately, just as the excitement peaked, my son had to dash off to school. I saw it as my chance to bench test the components, ensuring everything was functional before the real building commenced. I even took the liberty of installing the operating system and vital software, so he could dive right into gaming once it was completed.

The Build Begins

When my son returned, the actual assembly kicked off in earnest. With his older brother’s help, my son and I worked through the case installation, motherboard set-up, and even the installation of the AIO cooler. Admittedly, I made the rookie mistake of purchasing a cooler that was too large for our chosen case. But with quick thinking, we found a way to make it work, proving that sometimes a little tinkering can go a long way.

Though our cable management left something to be desired, the joys of our first family build far outweighed any technical
