Unraveling the Mystery of 1440p Frame Rates in PC Gaming

The realm of PC gaming often comes with its fair share of quirks and anomalies, but one persistent issue has baffled many gamers over the years: the peculiar limitation of 1440p resolution at 24 frames per second (FPS).

Over the last decade, I’ve encountered a strange phenomenon while gaming on various PCs. When I adjust the resolution settings of most titles, a clear pattern emerges. At 1080p, I enjoy a variety of framerate options—from 24 FPS all the way up to 120 FPS. This pattern continues for 4K resolution as well, where I’m presented with the same expansive selection of framerate choices.

However, the quandary arises with 1440p, where the options seem to mysteriously dwindle. Time and again, I find that I can only achieve a locked frame rate of 24 FPS at this resolution. The only notable exception has been Genshin Impact, which surprisingly permits a broader range of frame rates at 1440p.

I’ve experimented with creating custom profiles in the NVIDIA Control Panel, which shows some improvement for general Windows settings. Yet, when it comes to playing games at 1440p, I’m still met with the same frustrating limitation. This issue persists across multiple gaming setups, without any clear indication of what might be causing it, especially since my 4K monitor is perfectly capable of handling various resolutions without restrictions.

For years, I accepted this limitation as a technical quirk, assuming that hitting anything above 24 FPS at 1440p was simply beyond the current capabilities. Recently, however, I’ve noticed an uptick in discussions within the gaming community regarding 1440p at 60 FPS and beyond, leading me to question whether my experiences are indeed out of the ordinary.
