Navigating the Unknown: Taking Charge of Cybersecurity in a New Role

Starting a new job can be a thrilling yet daunting experience, especially when you find yourself tasked with unexpected responsibilities. Recently, I stepped into a position that involved managing security protocols—something I had little experience in. Although my background involved assisting with computer-related tasks, I had no prior indication that cybersecurity would become a significant part of my role.

When I joined the team, I discovered that the company lacked any formal cybersecurity measures. In fact, this responsibility hadn’t existed before my arrival, which made me feel both challenged and unprepared. While I understand that the organization is not currently under heavy scrutiny, there is an awareness that its profile will soon rise, prompting a need for enhanced security protocols.

To add to my concerns, the company plans to enlist the help of a security consultant in the future. My goal is to prepare the organization to ensure we don’t appear naïve when that expert arrives. So, I found myself grappling with a pressing question: where do I even begin?

Here are some initial steps I’m considering to tackle this challenge:
