Troubleshooting Bad Blocks on an iMac Internal SSD: Seeking Solutions
If you’ve encountered increasing bad blocks on your iMac’s internal SSD, you’re not alone in facing this frustrating issue. Here’s a detailed overview of my experience and what steps I took, along with a request for expert advice on possible solutions.
After updating Facebook Messenger, my iMac unexpectedly crashed and failed to boot. In an attempt to revive it, I created a bootable drive, which allowed the system to function normally; however, Finder did not detect the internal SSD. While Disk Utility acknowledged its presence, it was unable to mount, verify, or repair the drive.
I booted into Recovery Mode and faced the same challenges—Disk Utility failed to rectify the situation. Seeking alternative solutions, I tried Disk Drill, which ultimately indicated that the SSD was “dead” and that Data Recovery was not possible. In a hopeful venture, I attempted to back up the drive into a DMG image, but the process halted just as it began, and the SSD disappeared once again.
Despite the setbacks, I persistently tried to get the drive recognized. During one of these attempts, it was flagged for having “bad blocks.” I successfully deleted the identified blocks and initiated a deep scan to recover lost data, but this effort also faltered before completion, with the SSD vanishing again.
Striving to get a grasp on the situation, I recognized additional bad blocks on subsequent attempts. Utilizing the “search for lost partitions” feature yielded no results—zero progress was made.
