r/Cybersecurity to Go Private in Protest of Reddit’s API Changes

In response to significant community feedback, the r/cybersecurity subreddit has decided to take action against Reddit’s recent modifications to its API policies, which include shutting down third-party applications. From June 12th to June 14th, the subreddit will temporarily become private as part of a coordinated protest against these changes.

Many members have expressed their dissatisfaction with Reddit’s decision to restrict API access, resulting in widespread concern for the future of third-party apps that many users rely on. If no adjustments to the API policies are made by Reddit by the commencement of this blackout period, r/cybersecurity will remain private for a full 48 hours. After this period, we will reconvene to discuss our next steps as a community, whether that means continuing the protest or exploring alternative actions.

During the blackout, the subreddit will be inaccessible to unauthenticated users and new members. We encourage everyone participating in the protest to refrain from visiting Reddit during this time. Community input is valuable, and we welcome your suggestions on how to utilize the blackout period effectively. Ideas could range from minimizing new posts and comments to creating threads that direct users to alternative social media platforms such as Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky.

There is a possibility that Reddit may reconsider its decision, or they may choose to escalate tensions by further disrupting our moderation team or enforcing the subreddit’s public status. Regardless of the outcome, it has been a privilege to serve this community.
