r/cybersecurity to Go Private in Protest of Reddit’s API Changes
From June 12th to June 14th, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will temporarily transition to a private setting to express our dissent regarding Reddit’s recent modifications to its API policies, which jeopardize third-party applications.
After a thorough review of feedback from our community members, it is clear that a significant number of you feel strongly about urging Reddit to reconsider its moves to curb third-party app access. Given this overwhelming sentiment, if Reddit does not amend its recent API policy, we will proceed with a 48-hour blackout beginning on June 12th and concluding on June 14th. Post blackouts, we will seek your input on how to proceed—whether to prolong the protest or to take alternative actions.
During this blackout, the subreddit will not be available to new members or users who are not logged in. We highly encourage everyone to refrain from visiting the site during this period. If you have suggestions on how we can use this time effectively—be it limiting new posts and comments or promoting other social platforms such as Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky—please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
There is a possibility that Reddit may reconsider their stance, or they may react by taking more drastic steps, which could further undermine community trust—such as dismissing moderators or compelling the subreddit to remain public. Regardless of the outcome, it has been a privilege to serve and maintain this community.
