Between June 12th and 14th, r/cybersecurity will switch to private to oppose Reddit’s API updates and the shutdown of third-party applications

r/Cybersecurity Goes Dark: A Stand Against Reddit’s API Changes

In a significant move, the r/cybersecurity community has decided to take a stand against Reddit’s recent alterations to its API policy and the consequential shutdown of third-party applications. From June 12th to June 14th, our subreddit will go private in a show of solidarity and protest.

The feedback we’ve gathered from community members has been overwhelmingly clear: many users are disheartened by Reddit’s decision to limit API access, which hampers the functionality of valuable third-party applications. If there’s no reversal or modification of these changes from Reddit, we will go ahead with a 48-hour blackout, during which the subreddit will be inaccessible to individuals who are not members or not logged in.

During this blackout, we strongly encourage everyone to refrain from browsing Reddit altogether. We believe it is vital to amplify our collective message. If you have suggestions for activities during this period—be it fostering conversations around alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, or creating a general discussion thread—feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

While we hope that Reddit will reconsider and amend its API policies, we recognize the possibility of further actions that could disrupt our community and trust, such as moderator removals or enforced public access. Regardless of the outcome, it has been a privilege to serve as your moderators, and we appreciate your continued support.
