Between June 12th and 14th, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will be private in response to Reddit’s API modifications and the discontinuation of third-party applications.

r/Cybersecurity to Go Private: A Call for Unity Against Reddit’s API Changes

From June 12th to June 14th, the r/cybersecurity community will temporarily close its doors as a statement against Reddit’s recent API alterations that threaten the viability of third-party applications.

After careful consideration and extensive feedback—both from our recent post and via modmail—it is clear that a significant portion of the community is in favor of reversing or modifying Reddit’s decision to limit access to its API. This change has raised considerable concern among users, especially regarding the future functionality and accessibility of popular third-party apps.

In light of this, r/cybersecurity has decided to participate in a 48-hour blackout. If Reddit does not reevaluate its position by the conclusion of this period, we will consult our community on the next steps, whether that means extending our protest or exploring alternative actions. Ultimately, the direction will be determined by the community’s consensus.

During the blackout, newcomers and unauthenticated users will not be able to access our subreddit. Additionally, we encourage everyone to refrain from visiting Reddit altogether during this time. We welcome ideas on how best to utilize this protest period—whether that means limiting new posts and comments or providing introductions to alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky.

The future remains uncertain. Reddit may choose to listen to the feedback and adjust its strategy, or they could take steps that further erode trust—such as removing moderators or insisting that our community remain public. Regardless of the outcome, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve as your moderators.
