Between June 12th and 14th, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will become private in protest against Reddit’s API updates and the shutdown of third-party applications.

Upcoming Blackout: r/Cybersecurity Takes a Stand on Reddit’s API Changes

Attention, cybersecurity enthusiasts! We have an important update regarding our subreddit’s future and our collective stance on recent developments from Reddit.

From June 12th to 14th, r/cybersecurity will transition to a private mode as a form of protest against Reddit’s recent API alterations, which effectively phase out third-party applications and impose new limitations.

After gathering insights through modmail and community feedback, it’s clear that a significant portion of our members are opposed to these changes. If Reddit does not reconsider its API policy, we will proceed with a 48-hour blackout. During this time, the subreddit will not be accessible to new visitors or users who are not logged in. We encourage the community to refrain from using Reddit entirely during this period.

We want to hear from you! If you have suggestions for actions to take during the blackout, such as restricting new posts and comments or exploring alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, please share your thoughts in the comments section below. Our goal is to unite and decide the next steps as a community, whether that means extending the protest or pursuing other options.

While we hope Reddit may reconsider its stance, there is always the possibility of further actions that could erode trust, such as changes to subreddit management or mandates to keep our community public. Regardless of the outcome, we’re proud to serve as moderators for such an incredible group.

    • Ensure your community moderation tools are updated and configured to handle the temporary privacy settings. This includes scheduling the subreddit privacy status and informing moderators about the timeline.
    • If your organization relies on third-party applications that interface with Reddit, consider exploring alternative methods of engagement or data retrieval that do not violate Reddit policies. Additionally, stay informed about any API updates from Reddit to adapt your tools accordingly.
    • For users concerned about the impact on engagement, advise them to utilize alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, which are mentioned as potential options. You might also consider creating official communication channels outside Reddit to keep your community informed.
    • Finally, regularly monitor Reddit’s official announcements and community resources linked in your post to stay updated on any changes or progress regarding Reddit’s API policies and community responses.
