r/Cybersecurity to Go Private: Community Protest Against Reddit’s API Changes
From June 12th to 14th, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will temporarily switch to private mode as a form of protest against Reddit’s recent API alterations that threaten the existence of third-party applications.
After carefully considering feedback from our community members and discussions through modmail, it has become evident that a significant portion of our users opposes Reddit’s decision to discontinue support for third-party applications and enforce stricter API regulations.
Unless Reddit reconsiders and modifies these changes, r/cybersecurity will participate in a 48-hour blackout, commencing on June 12th. Following this period, if Reddit has not relented, we will reach out to the community for guidance on the next steps—whether that involves extending our protest, pursuing alternative actions, or devising a unified response.
During the blackout, the subreddit will be inaccessible to new users and those who are not logged in. We also encourage community members to refrain from browsing Reddit during this time. If you have any suggestions on actions we should take during the blackout—such as restricting posts and comments or creating introductions to alternative social media platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky—please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
It remains to be seen whether Reddit will choose to reverse their decisions or take more drastic steps that may further erode trust within the community, potentially leading to changes in moderation or subreddit accessibility. Regardless of what unfolds, it has been a privilege to serve as your moderators.
