Can a landlord’s security cameras impact my internet speed, and can I limit their bandwidth?

Addressing Internet Speed Issues Caused by Security Cameras: A Tenant’s Guide

As a new tenant, navigating the nuances of shared living spaces can be challenging, especially when it comes to managing internet connectivity. Recently, I encountered a situation that many renters may face: the impact of my landlord’s security cameras on my internet speed.

Upon moving into my new apartment, I discovered that my landlord has installed several security cameras in the common areas, with the Network Video Recorder (NVR) located within my residence. Initially, I didn’t think much of it, but I soon noticed frequent slowdowns in my internet speeds. After some observation, it became clear that these slowdowns coincided with times when my landlord appeared to be streaming the camera feeds.

Adding to my concern was the fact that I received messages from my landlord about smoking regulations almost immediately after I enjoyed a smoke on the patio—suggesting he was indeed monitoring the situation.

The crux of my dilemma lies in whether there’s a feasible method to manage the bandwidth allocated to these security cameras. Since I am the one paying for the internet and the router is inside my apartment, I began to wonder if I have any options available to me.

If anyone has experience in throttling bandwidth for specific devices on a shared network, or advice on how to approach this conversation with a landlord, I would greatly appreciate your insights!

Thank you for your assistance!
