My Background

Before taking on my role at Kraken, I was the Chief Security Officer at Uptake, a company focused on industrial artificial intelligence. Prior to that, I held the position of Vice President of Global Services at Rapid7, a comprehensive cybersecurity firm. My extensive background includes speaking at premier cybersecurity events such as Black Hat, DEF CON, and OWASP, where I’ve offered analysis on various topics including security breaches, malware, mobile security, and the latest information security trends. I’ve also had the honor to provide invaluable insights to organizations like the Department of Homeland Security, US-CERT, Interpol, and the United States Secret Service.

My journey in technology began at a very young age. I wrote my first lines of code at just 7 years old on a Timex Sinclair 1000 in the early 1980s. By the late 80s and early 90s, I was diving into the world of Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) with a Commodore 64 and later transitioned to an Intel 386 PC running Linux.

As someone who has been deeply involved in the Chicago hacker scene for decades, I also founded the THOTCON hacker conference, which will celebrate its 12th iteration this year. Throughout my career, I’ve investigated several of the largest data breaches in history, and in my recent years at Kraken, I’ve dedicated my efforts to design and implement robust security programs to safeguard our cryptocurrency exchange from potential attacks.
