Meet Nick Percoco: Cybersecurity Expert and Chief Security Officer at Kraken

Hello, and welcome to my blog! I’m Nick Percoco, a seasoned cybersecurity specialist with over 25 years of experience in technology and security. Currently, I serve as the Chief Security Officer for Kraken, one of the world’s leading digital asset exchanges. I also have the honor of founding SpiderLabs at Trustwave and co-hosting THOTCON, a prominent hacker conference held annually in Chicago.

A Journey Through Cybersecurity

From a young age, I was captivated by technology, beginning my coding journey at just 7 years old on a Timex Sinclair 1000. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s, I immersed myself in the vibrant Chicagoland bulletin board system (BBS) scene using a Commodore 64 and later an Intel 386 PC equipped with Linux. This early exposure laid the foundation for a lifelong career in cybersecurity.

Before joining Kraken, I held several notable positions, including Chief Security Officer at Uptake, an industrial AI company, and Vice President of Global Services at Rapid7, a well-respected cybersecurity firm. My experience has afforded me the opportunity to share insights on critical topics such as security breaches, malware, mobile security, and information security trends at esteemed events like Black Hat, DEF CON, and OWASP. I have also had the privilege of engaging with private audiences from organizations like the Department of Homeland Security, US-CERT, Interpol, and the United States Secret Service.

In my role at Kraken, I’ve dedicated the past four years to developing robust security programs to safeguard our cryptocurrency exchange from evolving threats. My involvement spans various facets of the cybersecurity industry, including investigating some of the most significant data breaches in history, which has given me a unique perspective on the challenges we face today.
