Meet Nick Percoco: Insights from a Veteran Cybersecurity Professional
Hello and welcome to my blog! My name is Nick Percoco and I am currently the Chief Security Officer at Kraken, a leading global digital asset exchange. With over 25 years of extensive experience in the fields of security and technology, I have cultivated a deep understanding of cybersecurity landscapes, particularly in the context of cryptocurrency.
A Journey Through Cybersecurity
Before my role at Kraken, I played pivotal roles at several prominent organizations. As the Chief Security Officer at Uptake, an industrial AI company, and as the Vice President of Global Services at Rapid7, a comprehensive cybersecurity provider, I gained valuable insights into security breaches, malware, and both mobile and information security trends. I have had the privilege of sharing this knowledge at major conferences such as Black Hat, DEF CON, and OWASP, as well as with esteemed organizations including the Department of Homeland Security, US-CERT, Interpol, and the United States Secret Service.
My passion for technology began early; I was coding on a Timex Sinclair 1000 computer at just seven years old in the early 1980s. By the late ’80s and early ’90s, I was actively engaged in the Chicagoland bulletin board systems, using a Commodore 64 and later an Intel 386 PC outfitted with Linux.
Contributing to the Hacker Community
For many years, I have been part of the vibrant Chicago hacker community, hosting THOTCON, a hacker conference that is currently gearing up for its 12th edition in 2023. My experience also includes investigating some of the most significant data breaches in history. Over the past four years at Kraken, I have focused on developing robust programs to safeguard our cryptocurrency exchange against various threats.
