Urgent Help Needed: Computer Security Threat from Prokermonantam.co.in

I’m reaching out for assistance regarding a pressing issue involving a friend’s Windows 11 Home computer. The situation appears quite serious, and I, unfortunately, lack the technical know-how to resolve it myself.

About six months ago, Avast antivirus was installed on the system, following the original installation of McAfee at the time of purchase. I believed I had successfully disabled McAfee during the Avast installation, but it seems that may not have been the case after all.

Currently, the computer is inundated with alarming pop-up messages claiming that viruses are being downloaded and that the system is under attack by malicious entities from Russia. Additionally, there’s a message regarding malware installation, with instructions to visit a McAfee page that links back to the dubious domain prokermonantam.co.in. The nature of these notifications raises significant red flags, as they seem far from legitimate, and I certainly do not want to engage with any links that might compromise the system further.

Moreover, I’ve noticed that Avast hasn’t been launching at startup, and my friend is unaware of when this issue arose. In an attempt to regain control, I accessed the installed applications to disable McAfee, but I encountered difficulties in doing so, for reasons unbeknownst to me.

What steps can I take to eliminate this threat and restore the computer’s security? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    • Disconnect from the internet: To prevent further potential malicious activity or data exfiltration, disconnect the affected computer from the network.
    • Boot into Safe Mode: Restart the PC and press Shift + Restart or repeatedly press F8 during startup to access Safe Mode. This can help prevent malware from launching automatically.
    • Remove Conflicting Antivirus Programs: Use the Windows Settings or Control Panel to uninstall both Avast and McAfee if possible. Since Avast isn’t launching at startup, you might need to use a dedicated removal tool from Avast’s official site to ensure complete uninstallation.
    • Run Malware Removal Tools: Download and run reputable tools such as Malwarebytes and Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. Perform full system scans to
