Recently, I’ve noticed significant fluctuations in my internet speed, oscillating between a sluggish 200KB/s and a somewhat acceptable 1MB/s. Typically, my connection hovers around the 400-500KB/s range. However, whenever I access a speed test website, my connection consistently delivers the expected results—often reaching the full 10 Mbps I pay for—without any significant variations in speed, even after several tests in quick succession.
An incident from over a year ago stands out in my memory. While troubleshooting an unrelated issue with tech support, I was asked to perform a speed test. Remarkably, the moment I informed them I was ready, my download speed inexplicably surged to an impressive 18 Mbps and remained at that level until I concluded the test. This certainly raises eyebrows about the practices of my ISP.

While it’s standard for ISPs to manage bandwidth according to your subscription limit, my experience suggests that there might be more happening beneath the surface. Notably, even after upgrading my plan to improve speed, I found the same unsettling fluctuation pattern only adjusted to mirror my new speed cap.
